International Golf Clube dos 500 is located in Sao Paulo, 60 km from the north border to Rio de Janeiro, quite accessible and easy to find.

Established in 1965 as a 9-hole course, in fact 10 holes, as hole 5/14 has a common tee-box and two greens, as opposed to the usual configuration with two tee-boxes and common green. Water in play on the first couple of holes, the rest is a quite open golfcourse with wide fairways, which uses trees as dividers. The course is pretty easy to play, a fact that high handicappers and beginners in the game definitely will find appreciating, keeping their ball usage to a minimum.

You will have 4 blind tee-shots a round, but not to worry, all are safe with a driver, with the fairway straight ahead behind the hill. As an exception to the rule maybe the 8/17 par5, where the big hitters may find their drives a little too far than they wanted, which brings a huge fairway tree into play. Less than 260-270 yards is safe. A good hook on the 3/12 par3 will relocate your ball to the Presidente Dutra highway, one of the busiest in Brazil, carrying the main traffic between Rio de Janeiro & Sao Paulo. You don’t want to do that. :-) And the 9/18 ? well, if you split the fairway with your drive, you may need to climb the palmtree (placed in the exact centre, 200 yards down the fairway) to get your ball back. A tip; AIM for it, and you will probably be good to go.

When we played the course in May 2005, it was in desperate need of maintenance, with the greens not much planer and faster than an ordinary backyard lawn, making it impossible to trust your putting. It was at the time said however, that green maintenance would start shortly, and hopefully this will make a difference in a 4-5 months time. The bunkers also need some serious attention. Anyone that reads this and has played the course on a later stage, please feel free to send us an update on the course conditions to include here on the site.
