Tee up on the first tee a beautiful morning in the heart of Rio de Janeiro, hit a perfect fade down the slight right dogleg 316 yard par 4 hole, and walk happily down towards the green only to find that you most probably lost your ball in the water hazard on the back left side of the green. What a deception. Make your drop, chip in to the green, and walk up to tap in your par. Only problem is…… there is already a ball in the cup !!! It could never be, could it…..? Oh yeeaahh, it is the first ball !

Oh, how I wish this was my story, but this time it was my oponent that could log in to Gavea Golf & Country Club’s more than 80 year’s old history as the very first person ever to hole out in one on the first hole. What a fantastic thrill, congratulations Cadu !

Gavea Golf & Country Club was founded in 1921, the golf course opened in 1929, and is hence the oldest golf club in the state of Rio de Janeiro. Founded by British and Scottish workers for the electrical company in Rio, Gavea remains today the most exclusive and probably the best maintained course in the state.

In an absolutely stunning setting, it is so easy to have your eyes and head elsewhere (than golf) and 3 putt, that must be the only drawback I can think of on this par 69 golf course. The first 9 holes are constant up and down, exciting fairways, and always something new to see. The back nine are partly played on the beach (hole 10 – 14), before you again cross under the main road and return to the mountains. The club also posess a first class restaurant and bar facilities, no need to stop by McDonalds to stagger your hunger after playing this course ;-)

Manicured fairways, excellent greens, massive nostalgic and cultural impact is the keywords for this fantastic golf course where you will need an invitation by a member to play. (Or stay at one of the hotels the club helds a convenience agreement with, which will set you up for a tee time)
